Data Center Duct Banks: Primary Service, Feeders, Generator Ties & Fiber

September 28, 2026 • 5 min read

Hyperscale and AI campus sites pack several underground duct-bank types into one civil package. Primary service, medium- and high-voltage feeders, generator ties, and fiber or communications runs often share the same trench corridor and the same spacer interval. Blue Ridge Thermoforming (BRT USA) CNC-cuts custom HDPE conduit arrays for those banks in Greenville, SC and ships them to the jobsite.

Bank types data centers typically need

Primary service

Entrance and primary duct banks bring utility or campus power into the building. Conduit sizes and counts follow the one-line and the civil duct section. Spacers hold that section through the concrete pour so the entrance bank stays true from the property line to the vault or gear room.

MV/HV feeders

Medium- and high-voltage feeder banks use the conduit sizes on your one-line and duct section. Feeder runs on large campuses can be long, with repeating spacer boards every few feet. Consistency board to board matters as much as the hole pattern itself.

Generator ties

Generator and standby ties often mix large power conduits with smaller control conduits on one cross-section. A custom CNC sheet can carry that mixed layout without forcing the bank into a single catalog hole size.

Fiber and communications

Fiber, communications, and other low-voltage conduits may sit in their own bank or share a sheet with power. When they share, the engineer specifies the center-to-center spacing between power and communications conduits. BRT cuts that spacing into the sheet. We do not assign an EMI clearance for you.

Mixed-size sheets on one board

One HDPE sheet can carry more than one conduit size. Columns and rows follow the duct section, not a catalog grid. A typical schematic pattern on data-center packages looks like this (illustrative, not a photo of a finished bank):

  • Top row: larger power conduits
  • Middle rows: additional power or mixed sizes
  • Lower row: fiber and communications, spaced from the power rows per the drawing
  • One CNC-cut HDPE sheet holds that grid
  • The next sheet repeats about every 4-7 ft along the duct bank

That pattern is cut from the drawing. It is not thermoformed. Thickness is typically 3/8 in or 1/2 in HDPE sheet.

Qualitative note on power and fiber spacing

When power feeders and fiber share a bank, call out the spacing the engineer wants between those conduits. Clearance decisions belong with the design team and the applicable codes and standards for the project. BRT’s role is fabrication: cut the hole array and spacing as drawn, route flow/rebar/ground holes if specified, and ship boards that match the package.

Jobsite ship from South Carolina

Boards leave the Greenville plant (184 Commerce Center, Greenville, SC 29615) for the jobsite. Just-in-time shipping and offsite warehousing are available when the schedule needs boards staged. BRT ships across the Southeast data-center corridor, including South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. The plant operates under an ISO 9001:2015 quality system.

Cut to the drawing, not to a catalog module

Data center duct bank spacers at BRT are custom HDPE conduit arrays. They are CNC-cut in Greenville, SC and shipped to the jobsite. Thickness is typically 3/8 in or 1/2 in. Flow holes, rebar holes, and a ground-wire hole are added only when the print calls for them. The boards are not interlocking molded catalog chairs, and they are not thermoformed parts.

Hyperscale and AI campus sites often put primary service, feeder banks, and generator ties on the same civil package, with long runs and repeating spacer intervals. That is where custom CNC sheet pays off: one programmed hole array becomes hundreds of identical boards. Prefabrication outside the trench stays practical because every board in a type matches.

Related fabrication at the same plant includes heavy-gauge thermoformed covers, housings, trays, and panels for facility gear. Keep those on the thermoforming line. Keep underground spacers on the CNC sheet line. The hub that explains both is custom plastic parts for data centers.

FAQ

Which data center banks can you space?

Primary service, MV/HV feeders, generator ties, fiber and communications, and mixed-size banks. Send the conduit schedule and we will cut the hole array to that drawing.

Can one board hold power and fiber?

Yes, when the drawing calls for a mixed bank. Tell us the center-to-center spacing between power and communications conduits. We cut that spacing; we do not assign an EMI clearance for you.

Are data center duct bank spacers thermoformed?

No. They are CNC-routed HDPE sheet. Thermoformed covers, housings, trays, and panels are a separate process line at the same plant.
