Custom Hard Drive Clamshells
Blue Ridge Thermoforming thermoforms custom hard drive clamshells for a single 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch drive, with caddy and no-caddy versions.
Request a QuoteA hard drive clamshell is the single-drive pack. Bulk lots stay in trays. The clamshell is what a graded drive ships in when it is sold or returned as one unit.
SSD clamshell packaging for a 2.5 inch drive and a 3.5 inch retail pack are both tooled from the sample, including the caddy if it stays on the drive.
One drive, held in the shell
2.5 drive clamshell
A compact shell for a 2.5 inch SSD or HDD, with the connector captured and the lid closing over the drive.
3.5 inch retail pack
HDD retail packaging for the larger drive, with a cavity deep enough for the housing and a closure that keeps it from opening in a parcel.
Caddy and no-caddy
Two versions: one for a bare drive and one for a drive that stays in its carrier. The sample decides the cavity.
Paired with bulk trays
Use hard drive trays for the lot and a clamshell for the unit. M.2 drives use an M.2 clamshell instead of this shell.
Static-control materials
- Clear or black static-dissipative options are available when a lot needs visual inspection, alongside conductive materials for the most sensitive parts.
- Static-dissipative and conductive shells for drive electronics.
- ESD-grade PET and rPET.
- Durable closures for bench handling and parcel shipment.

Unit packs for graded drives
- Fit-check against a caddy or bare-drive sample
- Match clarity to how the drive is presented
- Keep bulk counts on the tray
- Production runs at low or high volume under ISO 9001:2015 quality processes, made in Greenville, SC.
Resale packs that stay closed
A single drive in a mailer needs a shell that does not rely on loose dunnage. Thermoformed retention holds the drive and shows it when you choose a clear material.
Clamshell packaging is the general format if the part is not a drive. We supply the packaging for your resale or return flow. Wiping and grading stay with you.
Caddy and no-caddy versions should not share a cavity. A carrier changes the outline enough that a bare drive would rattle, and a caddied drive would not close. Send the version you actually ship. If both versions leave the building, quote two shells from two samples rather than forcing one cavity to do both jobs. The bulk lot still belongs in a hard drive tray, with the clamshell reserved for the drive that ships by itself.
Hard Drive Clamshell FAQs
Do you make both caddy and no-caddy clamshells?
Yes. Each version is tooled to the sample you send.
Is a 3.5 inch drive too heavy for a clamshell?
No. The shell and closure are designed for a 3.5 inch drive.
What are your minimums and lead times?
Depends on part and volume. Send your counts and we'll quote it.
Quote a hard drive clamshell
Send one drive, with or without the caddy, and we will quote the clamshell.
